KATMAI SKY LODGE

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Getting to Katmai Sky Lodge is part of the adventure-and we make it seamless.

    1. Fly to King Salmon (AKN)
Most guests fly commercially to Anchorage, Alaska, then take a short regional flight to King Salmon (AKN). We recommend flights arriving around 2:00 PM or 4:50 PM, as these align best with our lodge changeover schedule, but we’re flexible—just let us know your plans.

    2. Meet Our Team in King Salmon
A member of the Katmai Sky team will meet you at the King Salmon airport, help with luggage, and coordinate your transfer.

    3. Transfer to the Floatplane Dock
You’ll take a short van ride to our floatplane dock on the Naknek River.

    4. Scenic Floatplane Flight to the Lodge
Enjoy a beautiful floatplane flight (about 15 minutes) directly into Katmai National Park, landing at our remote lodge. Once you arrive, we’ll help you settle in and walk you through the plan for your stay.

From touchdown in King Salmon to arrival at the lodge, our team takes care of the logistics so you can relax and enjoy the journey into the wilderness.

  • Our 2026 season begins in May as we continue construction projects and preparing the lodge for our guests. We are accepting our first guests of 2026 in July and are accepting bookings through September. We operate with a maximum of six guests at a time to ensure a personal and unforgettable experience.

  • Alaska weather can change quickly, so we recommend packing layers and waterproof gear—even on sunny summer days. It’s always better to have warm gear and not need it than the other way around.

    • Warm layers (fleece or sweater)

    • Hat, gloves, and a neck gaiter or buff

    • Long-sleeved shirts (for sun and bugs)

    • Warm socks and base layers (especially June & September)

  • Due to safety and the nature of bear-viewing adventures, our lodge is designed for adults and older teens. That being said, every child is different, and parents know their kids best. Some older children are deeply curious about nature, comfortable outdoors for long stretches, and genuinely excited about wildlife- and for those kids, this kind of experience can be incredibly meaningful.

At the same time, our trips involve long days outside in a remote wilderness setting and require following important safety guidelines around bears, including staying calm, moving deliberately, and avoiding running or yelling. For some children, that can be challenging and make the experience less enjoyable for everyone. Because we operate with very small groups, we do have the flexibility to adjust daily plans and keep adventure days a bit shorter when appropriate, which can be helpful when traveling with a child.

Our guides absolutely enjoy sharing the experience with young minds and are always happy to help, but they are not responsible for childcare or supervision; parents remain fully responsible for their children throughout the trip. If your older child is comfortable in the outdoors, enjoys hiking and observing wildlife, and is able to follow safety rules consistently, we’re absolutely open to discussing an exception. We just want to make sure it’s a great experience for your child, your family, and the group as a whole.

  • Weather is part of life in Alaska, and we design our days to be fully flexible and adaptable. Our schedules adjust in real time based on weather conditions, wildlife activity, and guest preferences, with safety always as our top priority. While fly-out trips may occasionally be delayed or modified, the experience doesn’t stop when the planes do.

Even when weather keeps us close to home, we are still in the heart of Katmai National Park. The headwaters of Brooks Lake are just a few miles from the lodge and host its own bear population during certain times of the season. We also have access to Olga Lake, complete with a boat and kayaks for wildlife viewing, excellent birding, fishing opportunities.

Our property is threaded with trails that lead directly into the park, and our guides love sharing the incredible flora and fauna of the region — whether that’s exploring tundra and forest ecosystems, looking for mushrooms, learning about edible plants, searching for fossils, or simply slowing down and observing the landscape. Katmai is rich with life at every scale, and there is always something to discover.

In short, even when the weather changes the plan, it rarely limits the experience. Some of our most memorable moments happen on those quieter, unplanned days — and we embrace them fully.

  • We wrapped up construction on the main lodge and cabins in September 2025. Building in the bush means we can only work when weather and logistics allow, and we completed the bulk of construction right at the end of the season.

We’ll be flying back out early in spring 2026 to put the finishing touches on the cabins and to fly out all of our furniture and interior pieces, which are already purchased and staged in King Salmon. Because of this, we don’t yet have final interior photos to share — those will be available once we return to the lodge in spring.

This timing is also why we’re offering special introductory rates for our 2026 season. Early guests are helping us bring the final details together and will be among the very first to experience the lodge once everything is complete.

If you have questions about cabin layouts, amenities, or finishes in the meantime, we’re always happy to talk through what to expect.

  • Your all-inclusive stay at Katmai Sky Lodge is designed to be seamless, immersive, and thoughtfully curated.

    Your stay includes:

    • Round-trip floatplane charter transfers between King Salmon and Katmai Sky Lodge

    • Fully guided bear viewing and wilderness excursions throughout Katmai National Park

    • Private guest cabin accommodations designed for comfort in a remote, off-grid setting

    • Chef-prepared meals throughout your stay, including breakfast, field lunches, and elevated evening dinners

    • House beverages, including non-alcoholic drinks, beer, and wine

    • Professional guides with deep local knowledge of Katmai’s wildlife, landscapes, and safety protocols

    • Intentionally small group sizes (maximum of 6 guests) for a more personal, exclusive experience

Because we host only a small number of guests and are located near some of Katmai’s most productive bear viewing areas, each day is tailored to wildlife activity, weather, and guest interests. Some days may include scenic flights to remote locations, while others may involve hiking and exploring quieter, lesser-known areas—always with a focus on ethical wildlife viewing and low-impact travel.

No two days are the same, and that flexibility is part of what makes a Katmai Sky Lodge experience so special.

  • Bear safety is a top priority at Katmai Sky Lodge, and all of our activities are guided with a wildlife-first, risk-aware approach.

    Guided Expertise
All excursions are led by professional guides with extensive experience in bear behavior, wilderness travel, and Katmai-specific safety practices. Our guides are trained to recognize bear behavior and early warning signs, and they determine appropriate viewing distances at all times to ensure both guest safety and minimal disturbance to wildlife.

    Bear Spray Policy
For safety and logistical reasons, we ask that guests do not bring bear spray. Bear spray cannot be transported on commercial flights and must be carefully handled and stored on floatplanes. Improper handling can create unnecessary risk. Our guides carry and manage bear deterrents as appropriate, and guests will receive a safety briefing upon arrival.

    Ethical Wildlife Viewing
We practice ethical bear viewing and adhere to Katmai National Park regulations and best practices. This means maintaining respectful distances, minimizing disturbance, and prioritizing the well-being of wildlife and their habitat. Our goal is to observe bears in their natural behavior without influencing or altering their activities.tion

  • No two days at Katmai Sky Lodge are exactly the same—our schedule is shaped by weather, wildlife activity, and your interests. That flexibility is one of the things that makes each stay unique.

    Morning
Your day typically begins with coffee and a chef-prepared breakfast in the main lodge, followed by a briefing from your guide. Based on bear activity, weather conditions, and guest interests, we’ll outline the plan for the day—whether that means a scenic flight to a remote river, hiking to a quiet wildlife viewing area, or exploring nearby lakes and tundra.

    Midday
You’ll head into the field for guided bear viewing, photography, hiking, or optional fly fishing. Lunch may be enjoyed in the field or back at the lodge, depending on the day’s plan and the best opportunities for wildlife viewing.

    Afternoon & Evening
In the afternoon, you may return to the lodge to relax, review photos, and enjoy the landscape. On select days, we may pack dinner to-go and head back out into the park for a quieter evening experience. This allows us to enjoy wildlife viewing and photography during golden light, when day visitors and larger groups have returned to their lodges. For anglers, evening outings can also coincide with productive hatches and exceptional fishing conditions.

Evenings at the lodge feature chef-prepared dinners, shared stories, and time to take in Alaska’s long summer light and wilderness stillness.

Because we host only a small number of guests, each day is tailored to your group’s pace and interests. Some days may be flight-based explorations, while others are slower and more grounded—designed to maximize wildlife encounters while keeping the experience calm, exclusive, and unhurried.

  • Yes—Katmai Sky Lodge offers reliable electricity and Starlink internet, designed to provide comfort while preserving the quiet of a truly remote, off-grid setting.

    Electricity
Katmai Sky Lodge is powered primarily by a solar energy system, providing clean, quiet electricity throughout the lodge and guest cabins. A backup generator is used only when needed to supplement power, helping us minimize noise and environmental impact while maintaining reliability. Each cabin has power for lighting and charging personal devices and camera equipment.

    Wi-Fi & Connectivity
We use Starlink satellite internet at the lodge. Unlimited Wi-Fi is available in the main lodge for communication, light work, and sharing photos. Guest cabins have limited connection, which can vary depending on location and conditions. Cell service is not available at the lodge.

Many guests appreciate this balance—staying connected when needed while enjoying a rare opportunity to unplug and fully immerse themselves in Katmai’s wilderness.

  • Yes—our kitchen is happy to accommodate most dietary preferences and restrictions.

Our private chef prepares thoughtful, high-quality meals using fresh ingredients, and we regularly accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and allergy-conscious diets. If you have food allergies, medical dietary needs, or strong preferences, we’ll work with you in advance to ensure meals are both safe and enjoyable.

We ask guests to share dietary restrictions and preferences in our guest information questionnaire prior to arrival, so our team can plan menus and sourcing accordingly.

  • At Katmai Sky Lodge, conservation is at the core of how we operate. We believe thoughtful, low-impact travel is essential in a place as wild and ecologically important as Katmai.

    Solar-First, Off-Grid Power
The lodge is powered primarily by a solar energy system, with a generator used only as a backup when needed. This reduces fuel use, emissions, and noise while preserving the quiet of the wilderness.

    Small-Group, Low-Impact Travel
We intentionally host a very small number of guests at a time. Smaller groups reduce pressure on wildlife, minimize disturbance to sensitive habitats, and allow for more ethical, respectful wildlife viewing.

    Reducing Single-Use Plastics
We provide reusable water bottles and durable lunch storage solutions to minimize single-use plastics in the field. Our goal is to reduce waste and pack-out materials whenever possible, especially in this remote environment where disposal options are limited.

    Efficient Aviation Logistics
We prioritize efficient aircraft for guest transfers and logistics. Our aircraft are more fuel-efficient than many of the larger floatplanes commonly used in the region, helping reduce fuel consumption and emissions while still providing safe, reliable access to the lodge.

    Ethical Wildlife Viewing
Our guides follow Katmai National Park regulations and best practices for bear viewing, maintaining appropriate distances and minimizing disturbance. Our goal is to observe wildlife without altering their natural behavior.

    Thoughtful Land Stewardship
We practice Leave No Trace principles, careful waste management, and ongoing habitat stewardship around the lodge. As we continue to build, we prioritize restoration and minimal-impact infrastructure in this sensitive tundra environment.

Our philosophy is simple: protect the wild character of Katmai while creating meaningful, conservation-minded experiences for our guests.

  • Because Katmai Sky Lodge hosts a very limited number of guests and operates in a remote fly-out environment, our booking and cancellation policies reflect the advance logistics required to prepare for each trip. We strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive third-party travel insurance to protect your investment.

    Booking & Payment Schedule

    • A 50% deposit is required at the time of booking to reserve your dates.

    • The remaining balance is due 90 days prior to the start of your trip.

    • Final payments not received by the due date may incur a 5% late fee, and reservations without timely payment may be released.

    Accepted payment methods:

    • Bank transfer (1% fee)

    • Credit card (3% processing fee)

    • Check (no fee)

    • Zelle transfer (no fee)

    Cancellation Policy

More than 90 days before your trip:

    • Deposits are refundable only if we are able to rebook your space, minus a $500 cancellation fee.

Inside 90 days of your trip:

    • All payments are non-refundable, unless we are able to fill your spot.

Because of our extremely limited capacity and the logistical complexity of operating in Katmai, cancellations have a significant impact on our ability to operate the season.

    Weather & Travel Delays

Due to the nature of Alaska bush travel, we cannot offer refunds for missed days caused by weather, flight delays, or other events outside our control. We will always do our best to adjust itineraries and maximize your time in the park when conditions allow.

    Future Credit

In some cases, and at our discretion, deposits may be applied toward a future season.
